Summer has arrived. But are you ready for it? Make sure you take extra care of yourself in this hot, sunny season. The following tips will help you take care of yourself and enjoy the summer.
Now that both you and the sun are out, it’s time to summer-proof your skin. Start with a simple daily routine that will keep skin clean and sun protected, such as the following:

Step 1: Start with a moisturizing cream cleanser. Noxema Plus is a good one to try for all skin types.

Step 2: Use an astringent or toner made for your skin type to control oil.

Step 3: Be sure to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays with a sunblock that has an SPF of

at least 15. Some makeup is developed with sunscreen already in the products.

Keep summer makeup to a minimum. Sunlight and warm days will add natural color to your skin. This season, try lighter shades of your favorite colors. Eye makeup, blush and lipstick should be all you need. If foundation is a must, try a lighter shade and one that has a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.

Make summer eyes bright and playful with light shadow colors, bare-but-there liner and a coat of mascara. Blush cheeks lightly and blend well. Add a bright lip color and be sure to blot well. When you go out at night, add a bit more shadow, blush and lipstick and set the look with translucent powder.

Now that you have your skin care and makeup set, it’s time to work on your ‘do. Does summer hair make you crazy? If so, it’s time to take action.

First, schedule an appointment with your hairdresser. Ask for a simple cut that works with your hair that you can maintain all summer long. Be sure to watch as she styles it so you know how to do it at home. If need be, ask her to show you step-by-step.

Once you have a managed hairdo, keep it manageable by washing and conditioning it everyday or every other day, depending on your hair’s needs. Summer might not be the best time for a two-in-one product. A separate conditioner keeps hair soft and manageable. Use your favorite styling aids to shape and hold your hair all day long. Keep your body as healthy as your skin and hair this summer. Rising temperatures and more sun can be hazardous if you exercise outdoors. Try bringing your routine inside or find a cool, shady spot. If your sport keeps you exposed to the heat and sun, take caution: wear sunscreen with a high SPF, cotton clothes in light colors and a hat. No matter where you exercise, be sure to drink plenty of water afterwards.

At this time of year, everyone should protect themselves from the sun. For a day at the beach or pool, be sure to wear sunblock to avoid getting burned. If you do burn, there are ways to relieve it. Try a product designed to cool sunburns or use aloe. Taking aspirin every four-six hours helps as well. No matter how much sun you get, moisturize your skin to keep it soft and prevent your tan from fading. Be sure to keep using sunscreen no matter how dark your tan is.

Be sure to stock up on plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for mid-day snacks and to eat with lunch and dinner. For a delicious summer lunch, try this chef’s salad recipe. What you’ll need:

1 head iceburg lettuce

12 radishes, trimmed and sliced

2 stalks celery, chopped

1.5 cups salad dressing

4 tomatoes, peeled and each in six wedges

¾ cups cheese strips

1 cup ham strips

1 cup cooked chicken or turkey strips

4 hard-boiled eggs, sliced

What to do:

Core the iceburg lettuce and save four leaves for the the bed in which to put the salad. Place them around the edges of a large salad bowl. Cut or tear the remaining lettuce into bite-size pieces, place in the bowl and toss with the radishes, celery and half of the dressing. Arrange the tomato wedges around the inside edges of the lettuce. Combine the cheese, ham and chicken or turkey, toss and spread it over the lettuce and vegetables. Place the hard-boiled egg slices between the tomato wedges. Spoon the rest of the dressing over the salad.
